Low Oil Symptoms

Engine oil is a crucial component of the inner workings of your vehicle. It lubricates the engine's parts so they can move efficiently, and it also cleans and cools the engine. Without the right amount of oil, your engine can't work properly, thus causing your car to break down.

At Station Chrysler Jeep, we know just how vital it is to have the right amount of engine oil. If you live in the Mansfield, Attleboro, or Norton areas, read more about low engine oil symptoms, and then contact our service department for an oil change.

What Are the Signs of Low Engine Oil?

There are several ways to determine if your engine is low on oil. Basically, if a warning light comes up on your vehicle, you notice a strange burning smell, or hear loud knocking, it's likely that your engine's oil is running low. To help you know when your car needs more oil, here's a closer look at a few common warning signs...

Low Oil Warning Light

The most obvious indicator of low engine oil is the warning light popping up on your dashboard. When you start your vehicle, all the warning lights will appear for a second and then turn off. If the oil warning light stays on, that's a good indication that the level has dropped too low. You'll need to get to a mechanic right away so they can help with the situation.

Burning Oil Smell

If your engine is leaking, the oil will spill onto the hot components of the engine, causing a burnt oil scent. If you're driving and notice that burning smell, pull over when it's safe to check the oil level.

The easiest way to check if the oil level is low is by examining the car's dipstick. Refer to your owner's manual on the exact location of the dipstick. Then, turn the car off and wait for the engine to cool. Remove the dipstick, wipe it off with a clean towel, and then place it back in its spot. Remove it again, and read the oil level. If it reads too low, take your car to your local service department.

Knocking Noise

If you continue to drive while the engine oil level is low, you'll start to hear a loud knocking sound. Since there's now not enough oil to lubricate the engine's moving parts, the rods that secure the pistons of the vehicle will start to loosen. As more friction develops, the rods will get too loose and break down, causing the knocking noise to get louder. Your car is no longer safe to drive and needs to get taken to a mechanic immediately.
